English Review: Journal of English Education (ERJEE) requires that all research involving human participants be conducted in accordance with established ethical standards and that authors obtain appropriate ethical clearance prior to conducting their studies. This policy ensures the protection of participant rights, safety, and well-being, and promotes responsible academic research.

1. Requirement for Ethical Clearance

Authors must secure ethical approval from an appropriate institutional ethics review board (IRB), ethics committee, or other competent authority prior to beginning data collection for research involving:

  • Human participants (e.g., students, teachers, interviewees, survey respondents).
  • Personal, sensitive, or identifiable information.
  • Educational interventions, experimental instruction, or classroom-based studies.

Authors should indicate clearly in the manuscript that ethical approval was obtained and include the name of the approving institution and approval reference number where applicable.

2. Informed Consent

All participants in the research must be informed about:

  • The purpose of the study.
  • Their right to withdraw at any time.
  • How their data will be used, stored, and protected.
  • Assurance of confidentiality or anonymity, where applicable.

Written informed consent must be obtained from participants or, in the case of minors, from their legal guardians. Authors must state in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained.

3. Data Privacy and Confidentiality

Authors are responsible for ensuring that data is collected, stored, and reported in a manner that protects participant privacy and complies with applicable data protection regulations. Personal identifiers should be removed or anonymized unless explicit consent has been granted for disclosure.

4. Manuscripts Without Formal Ethical Approval

If a study was conducted in a context where formal ethical review was not available (e.g., independent research, certain institutional settings), the authors must:

  • Justify the absence of formal ethical clearance.
  • Demonstrate that the study still adhered to ethical principles (e.g., voluntary participation, confidentiality, minimal risk).
  • Provide a statement of ethical self-assessment in the manuscript.

The editorial board reserves the right to request additional documentation or reject manuscripts that fail to meet ethical standards.

5. Ethical Responsibility in Publication

Authors, reviewers, and editors share responsibility in ensuring that only ethically sound research is published. ERJEE will investigate any concerns regarding unethical research practices and take appropriate action, including manuscript withdrawal or retraction.
